Clinic readings are snapshots taken at intervals that do not match the pace of change during active weight loss. Someone losing 1 to 2 pounds a week can see a meaningful pressure shift between quarterly appointments, and white-coat effects mean the clinic number is often the least representative reading of the month.

Home monitoring also produces something a single clinic measurement cannot: a trend. A prescriber reviewing two weeks of morning and evening averages can adjust an antihypertensive with confidence. A prescriber looking at one reading taken after you rushed through a car park generally cannot.

What Separates an Accurate Monitor From an Inaccurate One

How to Take a Reading That Is Actually Usable

Sit for five minutes first, feet flat, back supported, arm resting at heart height. Do not measure within 30 minutes of caffeine, nicotine or exercise. Take two readings a minute apart and record the average, twice a day, for at least seven days before drawing any conclusion from the numbers.
