Fitness trackers are near-universal among people losing weight, and on a GLP-1 they are more useful than usual — provided you use the parts that work. Optical wrist sensors measure heart rate reasonably well at rest and poorly during rapid movement. Step counts are dependable. Sleep staging is approximate. Calorie expenditure, the number most people buy the device for, has the widest error margin of anything it reports.
That distinction matters more on this medication than off it. Someone eating substantially less because their appetite has been suppressed, and then eating back an overstated calorie burn, can undermine the deficit entirely. Used for trends rather than absolute numbers, though, a tracker surfaces two things that genuinely matter during rapid weight loss: whether resting heart rate is moving in the right direction, and whether daily movement has quietly collapsed.

The Metrics Worth Watching on GLP-1
Resting heart rate. The single most useful long-term signal a tracker provides. It tends to fall over sustained weight loss and improved fitness, and a sudden unexplained rise is a reasonable prompt to check in with a prescriber — it can accompany dehydration, which is common when GLP-1 medications reduce fluid intake along with food.
Step count. Reliable, simple, and the metric most likely to reveal the drop in spontaneous movement that accompanies reduced calorie intake. If your daily steps have fallen since starting treatment, that is actionable in a way a calorie estimate is not.
Heart rate during resistance training. Useful for confirming you are actually recovering between sets rather than turning strength work into unproductive cardio. Preserving muscle requires adequate loading and adequate rest.
Sleep duration. Directionally useful, though consumer sleep staging does not match laboratory polysomnography. Total time asleep is the number to watch; the breakdown into stages should be treated as an estimate.
Where Wrist Devices Fall Down
Optical sensors read blood flow through the skin, and that signal degrades with motion, cold hands, tattoos and loose straps. During weightlifting, cycling with hands on bars, or anything involving wrist flexion, wrist heart rate can be substantially wrong. If heart rate accuracy during training matters to you, a chest strap is the answer and it is not expensive.
Calorie expenditure is the weakest output of any consumer tracker because it is modelled rather than measured, using heart rate, movement and your entered body statistics. Those statistics change continuously during GLP-1 weight loss, and most people never update them, which compounds an error that was already large. Treat the number as a relative indicator at best and never as a budget to eat back against.

Setting It Up So the Data Stays Honest
Update your weight in the app at least monthly during active weight loss. Every derived metric — calorie burn, VO2 estimate, heart rate zones — is calculated from a body weight figure, and a stale number silently corrupts all of them.
Pick two metrics to actually watch and ignore the rest. For most GLP-1 users those two should be daily steps and resting heart rate, both read as a seven-day rolling average rather than day to day. Everything else on the dashboard is noise you will stop looking at within a month anyway.
